X terms of service has right to take back username. X ported his followers over to new account at least, he said. Vaught is still using X, though he did set up account on Threads and Mastodon.

      They can, but if they want to keep the respect of the community they shouldn’t.

      And the respect of the community is quite important on a social media.

      Legally, you are entirely correct.

      As an admin of a Lemmy instance though, I can assure you that the entire userbase of Aussie.zone would riot if I decided to simply take over a username because I thought it was cool. And they’d be right to. Even for a guy whose yardstick of outrageous actions is so out of alignment with the norm, this was not cool.

          I honestly can’t claim credit for how wholesome the instance is. The users make the place what it is. I spend maybe 15 minutes a day reviewing user account requests and reports. I can say that 0% of the users I’ve had to ban were locals. The locals are marvellous.
