I’ve never had much success with this. It starts out fine and then I’m like “I’m being stupid, I should write some code to write this code for me.” Then later “I should write some code that will write the code that’ll write the code for me.” Then I get lost in all the abstraction and say “fuck it, I’ll just play a video game”.
I just end up refactoring the same 3 classes, pass out, and wake up to clean code with documentation. It’s like the cobbler and the elves but code and weed.
Drug addiction is only negative if it causes you problems in life, and I’d say that coffee doesn’t really cause me problems in life.
I get anxiety issues from Coffee and tend to feel completely exhausted at the end of days. I try to ditch it and mostly replace it with Jasmine Tea, Oolong or Yerba Mate

I like Yerba Mate, but I dare not drink it that much on account of the absolutely massive caffeine content it has (granted you drink it bombilla-style).
Idk what the issue with too much caffeine is. Like, even my math teacher told me to be caucious but I dont feel exhausted at the end of the day like on Coffee.

I would love to drink one cup of coffee a day but any amount of coffee will amplify my anxiety. I drink once I’m cured

Iirc coffee addiction worsens sleep quality and costs money. It’s not like blocking your body from being tired can really be beneficial.
Depends on how addicted. People tend to conflate 1 cup in the morning with 6 throughout the day because they both use them as a pick me up.
Alternatively you have undiagnosed adhd and it helps you function like a real human :D
One of the reasons I was able to argue my ADHD was impacting my life negatively was the fact I was drinking enough coffee to hurt my health just to feel human and I still had executive dysfunction, so stimulants would be more effective and overall work as harm reduction. Now I’m not even on stimulants (technically), I’m finding bupropion works best for me. I still have a small cup of coffee in the morning, as it keeps me regular.
I think, if left to my own devices, I will have about 2-6 cups of instant coffee in a day depending on my mood. Though I don’t think there’s much caffeine in it? I never thought about howwww much caffeine was going in, but maybe that’s because it doesn’t do much for me besides helping focus (poorly at that).
4 cups of coffee a day is fine
Coffee also is high in polyphenols - the benefits almost certainly outweigh the drawbacks. Just don’t drink coffee after the morning.
There are plenty of other sources for polyphenols - including tea, but also chocolate, qinoa, buckwheat etc.
There is no need to drink coffee in order to replenish polyphenols in your body.
And drawbacks are huge: aside from broken sleep, caffeine puts a giant strain on cardiovascular and other systems, and in people with caffeine addiction, not having their cup leads to high irritability, sleepiness, dizziness, and a lot of other symptoms.
There are plenty of studies displaying improved cardiovascular health in those who drink 1-4 cups of coffee a day.. Generally, cardiovascular risks of caffeine from coffee are not important for the average person’s health decisions.
Also tea has caffeine as well (technically dark chocolate too, but less than tea so not really a concern).
And again, the solution to sleep issues are to not have caffeine (tea, coffee, or otherwise) more than a few hours after you wake up.
Withdrawal symptoms are not a major concern - they are temporary at best.
Edit: there are plenty of sources of polyphenols - but frankly the average American does not get nearly enough generally. If you have a typical American diet, I would not recommend quitting coffee as a health measure unless you have already drastically increased consumption of polyphenols generally.

I wish I didn’t have such a dependence on coffee. I’m about to go on a trip and am brining instant coffee with me to the airport in case the shops are closed during my early flight and I’m not able to get coffee until after checking in which is like an hour and a half from the airport.
As a side note, I’m in a third world country and going to an island. They will totally have coffee there, but i might not have access until later in the day.
I totally get it. When I travel I take caffeine gum. So I don’t have to worry about finding coffee or resort to a energy drink. Instant coffee I drink instead of soda at home. Lol.

Sometimes I wonder if in 75 years people will look back on our caffeine use in this generation like we currently look back at cocaine use in products in the 19th century. Until then, I continue to slurp down coffee like that is my actual job.
Caffeine is pretty well studied and it’s known that the long term health effects are nothing close to cocaine. I doubt if there was any good science back then on the long term effects of cocaine, let alone enough education for the populace to know and understand it.
However social perceptions may change anyway. What we consider as not serious may be considered much more serious in the future. For example many people get headaches or even migraines as a withdrawal symptom of caffeine, and we don’t consider a headache to be serious.
But I saw a Star Trek episode once where Picard gets a headache and it was a big deal because those had been solved for hundreds of years by that time! Turns out the ferengi were controlling his mind or something. So caffeine may be considered a serious drug in the future if it interferes with the detection of alien mind control devices.
