How would you describe the level of trust you have for IT systems, and IT security in general?

Anyway, “has seen some shit” could easily sum up huge swaths of my CV.

I don’t, but I’ve worn long underwear due to sitting still in a cool office for hours on end… at a Linux terminal. The thigh-high socks are starting to make a lot more sense now.

More or less, yes. Decades ago, the dominant kind in the US was perk (percolated) but that fell by the wayside¹. The only time it makes sense to order an Americano by name here is at a coffee bar where it’s wise to specify how you want your cup made.

I had to look this up: you are correct. The RAW on this is pretty clear: It’s a suppression field alright, and not a cancellation effect.

So, it’s probably more useful for wielding a cursed weapon or handling magical traps. It would also be great at disguising magic items from detection under pretty specific circumstances. All-in-all, just the thing a thief or rogue would want in their toolbag.

That’s how I run my table. I am a merciful god, but also a petty god if you reach for the heavens a little too hard. D&D magic already screws with thermodynamics to the point where free energy just exists, so I try to draw a line just short of where anyone figures that part out.

In the back of my mind, I’m always asking the question: “Why wasn’t this loophole exploited in the world already?” That usually prompts a suitable response.

Exactly. In the situation that OP raises, I ask myself: “Does Newton or Gandalf win this argument?”

All you need to do is sit back and watch. With the occasional rare exception, most everyone I’ve ever seen try is middling to just awful at “picking up” girls.

Plus, a lot of the time, we’re talking about the social equivalent of a “cold call.” You’re a complete stranger selling something they didn’t even ask for. So… don’t! Take some time and integrate to a social group or two (if you can). Become a familiar face. Things happen much more fluidly on referral anyway.

This does make me wonder: do municipalities with a large number of roundabouts have stats for how these things foil drunk drivers? I feel like there’s a serious possibility of reducing fatalities if we just replace the center of these circles with ponds and/or sand traps.

It’s that. It’s been a hot minute, but (IIRC) for me it was the less-than-great UI/UX that really adds up to a high friction experience. Especially when compared with software like Slack or Discord.

Honestly, what I find frustrating with Teams is that both MSN Messenger and Skype were right there. It’s not even an issue of copyright or trademark as MS owns both. Even just lazily re-branding Skype would have been head-and-shoulders above what we have now.

I like me some freebies, but I could use some friendly recommendations not in the FPS or MOBA category. Outside those two genres, it seems to be just idle clickers and unbalanced pay-to-win RPGs. The reviews on these two remaining categories are typically not very good.

To be completely fair, it’s hard to overstate the durability of an old Thinkpad. They’re so ubiquitous, Linux compatibility is almost guaranteed. Then, after the battery goes, attach it to a UPC and ride that setup for another decade at least.

As someone who just picked through the Zig docs (take this with a mountain of salt), Zig has a few things going for it:

• spec is simple and closer to C in scope
• modern language design, toolchain, and overall ergonomics
• Go-like struct & interface system
• 1st-class C interoperability

Go foists co-routines on you and the runtime, and Rust has the borrow checker. Both of these things deeply impact language design, standard libraries, and the overall developer experience. So Zig might actually be a “more modern C” in many ways which makes it a contender. That said, it’s not a 1:1 comparsion since it lacks everything else that C++ does: you’d have to re-envision your software designs as something other than OOP if that’s what you’re used to.

Ah yes, Five Guys. Where the fries turn into a pile of greasy mush if not eaten within the first five minutes your order is ready. But you’ve completed that task, you’re now full-up on fried potato, but now your burger is cold or at best half eaten. Nobody should have to eat with the gusto of a professional contestant just to make the most of things. It’s a meal that conspires against itself, every single time.

If you skip the fries, the burgers are actually pretty good and can enjoy it at any pace.

Yes, but to be fair, it’s peak mid. Most other chains do a worse job on burgers, and to do better, you have to go substantially upmarket.
