They’re more like AndroidTV boxes with a full menu and HDMI-CEC support, only they came out back in the day when Chromecasts were just for casting. They were also dirt cheap; unfortunately that’s because they were made with bargain-basement parts which often failed or started to overheat easily a few months in.

Funnily enough I think the percentage use of adblockers is going to go up a fair bit thanks to what Google is doing. My amazingly sweet “just go along with anything” MIL actually complained to me about YouTube ads the other day, then ads on websites in general. She jumped at my offer to install a different YouTube client and a good adblocker once I explained that it was a possibility for her tablet.

If they wanted to pull this off they needed to do it quietly, not draw attention to the fact that adblockers exist and are apparently so effective they need to do something very public about them.

You would think, but the number of people I’ve met who surf the web without any adblockers at all and just seem fine with it is alarming. I think Google is counting on a lot of people just not knowing any better.

I stopped using it for about 5 years because there was this truly cursed period where it wouldn’t remember manual connections if you weren’t logged in and wouldn’t work without an active internet connection if you were logged in. Even after they fixed both of those there was still a 50/50 shot it would treat logged-in local devices as remote devices and stream out via your internet connection and then back in to the client device. In fact I still don’t log my devices in if I don’t have to.

This is why they can pry my ability to work from home from my cold, dead hands.

Opus consistently impresses me with how good audio sounds at ridiculous compression levels, both music and speech. 4 minutes of music not even breaking 900k and it sounds just as good as the ol’ 128kbps mp3s, and that’s stereo. Can’t even imagine how much you could squeeze down mono audiobooks.

I bought a first gen Sansa Clip ages ago on Black Friday sale and fell in love with the damn thing. Small but not too small, good controls, good sound, intuitive UI, uses universal drivers (not a sure thing at the time), even has an FM radio built in. I’ve picked up so many more advanced devices over the years but I keep coming back to it. It’s just a solid piece of hardware.

Also you can install Rockbox on it and play DOOM, if you’re into that sort of thing.

MP3s compress down a lot, as low as 1 meg a minute for acceptable quality depending on the content. Newer codecs like Opus and AAC can easily do that with much better quality, and your Pixel will definitely be able to play them.

Bonus if the vendor refuses to provide any further support until your department signs off on the resource expansion.

I can’t speak for everyone else, but I know I was taken aback by the prospect that selfhosting meant I’d be caching copies of media uploaded to other instances without any way to opt out of that. It’s one thing to provide links, it’s another thing to be functioning as a knockoff CDN. That’s a bit more than I’m willing to do for the sake of a vanity instance.

Dunno about other browsers, but if you can get Firefox to view .onion links as a separate Application or File Type you should be able to give it a separate associated action, then just select Tor browser as the handler.
