  • Because the backslash is an escape character:

    1. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -> ¯_(ツ)_/¯
    2. ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯ -> ¯\(ツ)
    3. ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯ -> ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Explanation:

    1. the backslash is used to escape the underscore.
    2. the first backslash escapes the second backslash, so it’s shown as a backslash. The pair of underscores is used to display the characters between in italics
    3. both the backslash and the first underscore are escaped, everything finally works

  • My experience is that the programmers from the first row very much still exist. My theory is that the number of programmers from the first row stayed the about same or even increased slightly. There are so many more so called “programmers” overall now, however, that in relation the first row programmers are much rarer now. And to be fair, you don’t need a programmer capable of programming entire games in assembly to center a div.

  • Self driving cars will allways use far more energy and space per passenger than a train or light rail. And personally owned cars will spend more than 90% of their time just standing around, being useless and wasting space. If you propose self driving taxis, you’re just another step closer to trains.

  • The last times May 4 was on a Thursday were 2006, 2017 and 2023. The Core 2 wasn’t released until July of 2006 so I’d guess the correct year is 2017, but even then the hardware was already pretty dated. For reference, in 2017 the first generation Ryzen prozessors and Intel Kaby Lake (7th generation Core i) were around.

  • To be fair that’s mostly a case of “even a broken clock is right twice a day”. Psychology was still in its infancy back then and they had so few ideas how to actually help people that insulin shock therapy and lobotomy seemed like good ideas. When looking at it with modern knowledge it’s easy to say they already knew when pointing at the bits of decent ideas back then. In reality that’s cherry picking between the heaps of wrong and outright dangerous ideas prevalent at the time.
